4 Ways to Increase YouTube Watch Time

ANIMATED INFOGRAPHICS 1 (1)

Structure Playlists to Drive a Linear Viewing Experience

Create playlists for your Youtube videos in order to guide future viewers toward more viewings and longer watch time.

Organize your playlists to covers topics of your niche.

First, create a playlist that demonstrates all your top-performing videos. By focusing all your best videos in one playlist, audience retention is more likely to occur and eventually, they will subscribe.

You should also create more playlists that fit well with more specific topics in your niche. For example, let’s say you own a channel that focuses on online marketing. Create playlists that focus on subtopics of ‘online marketing’ such as ‘youtube marketing’, ‘instagram marketing’, ‘twitter marketing’ and so on.

Don’t forget to fully customize each playlist that fit the subtopics; add suitable thumbnail, edit the description focused on keywords etc.

When you organize the videos in such sequences, viewers will more likely to watch other videos to find out what more you have to say. Ultimately, this will boost your watch time, which helps elevate your ranking on Youtube.

Choose Titles and Thumbnails That Accurately Reflect Your Content

The combination of titles and thumbnails can potentially impact your views and rankings on Youtube. Both act as the main trigger for people to click on your videos.

YouTube’s Creator Academy offers these suggestions for creating clickable thumbnails:

  • Choose an image that accurately reflects the content of your video so viewers know what to expect when they click. It’s important not to mislead viewers, because they’ll be more likely to be disappointed and stop watching.
  • Design an image that will compel viewers to click and see more.
  • Use both the thumbnail and title to tell an intriguing story.
  • Make sure your thumbnails will work effectively on both mobile and desktop.
  • Look at the Audience Retention reports for your videos to measure the effectiveness of your thumbnails. If you see a sharp drop off in the first 10-15 seconds, your video may not be delivering on the expectations suggested by the title and thumbnail.
  • Your thumbnail, title, and description should give potential viewers a good reason to watch your video over others in your niche.

Use Cards Throughout Your Videos

Cards are useful to keep viewers engaged by linking to other videos on your Youtube channel that they might be interested in.

For example, you can add cards exactly before the time in the video when viewers are most likely to drop off. You can figure out when exactly viewers drop off using Analytics.

Create Content Based on Long-Tail YouTube Keywords

Focusing on long-tail Youtube keywords can help you gain more viewers to watch your videos.

Initially, you can start researching for keywords by using Youtube’s suggestions feature in their search box. All you need to do is to type in a word your audience is interested, and a list of dropdown suggesting related keywords come up.

Then, take down these keywords so you can add later in your video tags when you upload content.

I wrote more about this here: How To Find The Right Keywords

You can also visit your competitors’ channels and pay attention to their top performing videos. Take note of the keywords and replicate the videos that fit to your audience.

How To Get 4000 Hours of Watch Time on YouTube in 2020

MAKE MORE VIDEOS

The more videos you have on YouTube the more videos your audience can watch. It is much easier to stack 4000 hours of watch time if you have 100+ videos for a new subscriber to binge watch, rather than just 5–10 videos on the channel.

MAKE VIDEOS LONGER

You do not need to stretch a 2–3 video into a 30minute snore, but if you can extend a video, add more value within what you are offering, then your audience will watch for longer and help get you the watch time you need.

Increase Watch Time on YouTube with Playlist Series

4000 Hours of Watch Time can seem like a mountain to climb but if you make series content that links to each other and lends itself to binge watching, then you have set the trap you need to trigger this watch time hack in 2019. Series playlists auto suggest the next video in the playlists, can auto play the content and passively builds channel watch time. Pick a topic, break it down into 5–6 videos and really deep dive into the content. Why make a rushed video that is 20–30 mins long, when you can make 5–6 very detailed 10 min tutorials or documentary on a topic that explains it better and demands more engagement.

Live Streams for fast Watch Time on YouTube

If you need watch time fast and your audience is engaged, why not live stream? Live-streaming is a great way to make quick less edited content that invites participation. Pop online with your favourite game or a live Q&A and watch your subscribers pop in for a chat. If you stream for an hours and have 30 people watch you, that’s 30+ hours toward your 4000 hours of watch time goal you need to apply for that YouTube Partnership Program in 2019.

Update Your Keywords Every Month

Trending keywords most often have its own time limit. Today, those keywords can become highly searched, but weeks (or months) later, it may dropped its rankings – or new subtopics have taken over in terms of relevancy. In order for your videos to remain relevant, it’s best to always pay attention to latest trend related to your keywords once every few weeks.

To find which keywords work (and do not work), go to Youtube Studio, click on Analytics, go to ‘Reach’ tab – scroll down till you find ‘Traffic source: YouTube search’. Click on it and Youtube will show keywords that are popular and otherwise. Take the info, and use these keywords when updating your videos.

Leave Links On Your Social Media

Obviously, social media is crucial to attract your audience from multiple platforms. I’d recommend to not only post links on your feed, but to also leave links to your latest Youtube video on your profile.

Tips for Growing Your YouTube Channel

ANIMATED INFOGRAPHICS 1

Commit to Posting to YouTube Multiple Times Per Week

Keeping a regular schedule with multiples posts every week is essential to raise your channel in the algorithm quickly. In fact, multiple reports have indicated that Youtube channels that post multiple posts every week perform much better and also getting more recommended views.

Having tons of content in the beginning on your topics (preferably niche) will help your channel in the algorithm department. By having value, you are not only giving reasons to watch your videos, but also a reason to subscribe.

Begin Each Video With an Interesting Hook

Hooking your viewers to stay and watch is nothing new. It’s been a long practice by movie production each time they release trailers for movies. It’s the same case as you publish a new video. Take the best and interesting parts of your video and compile them together. Remember not to include all of the best bits, but just enough to hook viewers to watch your video till the end. Create enough interest to attract viewers. Think about it.

However you hook viewers, make sure your opener relates directly to the subject matter. Viewers clicked because they were interested, so quickly get into the subject they wanted to hear about in the first place.

Keep Titles and Opening Credits Short

Quite a number of Youtubers (even the seasoned ones) continue to create intro which are considered too long. The whole opening intro should not take more than 5 seconds! Remember this.

People click on your thumbnail to get straight to the video. They don’t want to have to wait to watch your content. Not to forget, the amount of ads viewers go through these days which you need to keep in mind too.

Edit Distractions Out of Your Video

Recording videos can be nerve wrecking, even for seasoned Youtuber. Despite of having scripts written down, there will be some mistakes done along the way such as long pauses, mumbles, out of tune voice, mis-pronounciations and so on. Don’t worry, this happens to everyone. What you need to do is to make the best of it. Remove all the unwanted clips that you don’t want included in the final video. Make it concise and interesting. Don’t give a reason for viewers to click away.

Replicate Topics or Tactics From Top-Performing Videos

This method is what I call ‘reverse-engineering’ other successes.

The idea here is to browse through other top Youtubers in your niche and determine their Most Popular videos in the ‘Videos’ tab.

List down the Top 10 videos and be sure to pay attention to each title and keywords involve.

Once you have acquired these videos, replicate the videos that fit your channel best which include the thumbnails, video description, titles, keywords, tags and so on.

You can also find your best converting videos in the Creator Studio by accessing the Analytics, click Subscribers and Youtube Watch Page.

In the list that appears, see which videos attracted the most subscribers.

Develop Videos as a Series

This is where you start leveraging Playlists where you can add videos as series in specific topics of your niches.

You can start developing a series content based on your best performing videos. Then, you can also add a playlist which demonstrates a specific keyword in your niche respectively.

Collaborate With Other YouTubers

Personally, collaboration with other Youtubers is the best way to extend your reach in the market.

It is effective since your channel is being cross-promoted by another Youtuber which is seen as a trustworthy medium compared to advertisements by Youtube.

If you’ve followed my writings enough, you’ll know how often I champion collaborations above other marketing strategies.

This is because social proof has solid influence on people. When a Youtuber collaborates with you, it’s seen as an endorsement to their audience. Viewers who invest heavily in the topics won’t mind to check your channel, and probably subscribe too if they like your content.

Promote Collaborations in the Video’s Title, Tags, and Description

When you collaborate, it’s important you take full leverage of it.

Therefore, it’s important to ensure your collaborator’s viewers are able to find your channel without a fuss.

You need to feature the collaborator’s name, face & link to their channel. Add these in the titles, description and thumbnail. Just be sure to add them subtly. Don’t forget to share these content throughout your entire social media platform.

In return, be sure your collaborator does the same too on their video(s).
